I designed Perception as the entry point to inquiry rather than simply a stage for knowledge delivery.

For non-native language learners, moving directly into open-ended AI inquiry can create additional cognitive and language demands. I therefore begin by building a concrete learning context through narrative, role-play, visual cues, and interactive tasks, allowing students to first enter the story before gradually recognizing the problem within it.

Engage → Observe → Understand → Choose

Students become engaged through the story, observe and identify key information through interactive activities, develop understanding through reading, vocabulary learning, and narrative exploration, and finally make an independent choice about what they want to investigate. My design principle is to make technology serve learning readiness, rather than asking students to use technology for its own sake. By combining storytelling, gamified interaction, and learning scaffolds, Perception creates a low-barrier but purposeful entry point into the subsequent AI-supported inquiry.

Choose Your Investigation Target

Students begin by selecting an investigation target. By allowing students to choose their own investigation target, the interface gives subsequent reading, clue collection, and inquiry activities a clear and personalized direction.

Case Reading Room

Students read the picture-book content related to their selected animal while recording relevant characteristics and clues in the Clue Map.

The activity moves students beyond passive reading toward active information extraction, preparing them to use textual evidence in subsequent challenges and scientific inquiry.

Key Vocabulary

The Key Vocabulary page organizes essential words from the picture book and subsequent inquiry tasks into categories.

Students can browse vocabulary by category and access pronunciation and meanings, providing structured language support throughout the reading and investigation process.

Students use “The Mystery Solved” to progressively unlock the next parts of the picture-book narrative, maintaining curiosity while developing a deeper understanding of the characters and the central question. They then move to the “Animal Category Pool”, where they independently select an animal to investigate.

This sequence connects narrative engagement, curiosity, and learner choice, providing a clear cognitive and task-based entry point for the subsequent AI-supported inquiry.
