BuddyVerse is a game-inspired language-learning conceptual design project exploring how game-based environments might support meaningful speaking practice and intercultural learning.

Working in a four-person cross-cultural team, we conducted eight learner interviews, synthesized recurring needs in different cultures, and developed a virtual-world concept connecting contextualized language practice, cultural exploration, and social interaction.

How might we help language learners move from classroom knowledge to confident, culturally meaningful communication?
Our challenge was not simply to create more opportunities to practice, but to design a low-pressure environment where learners could rehearse communication, understand its cultural context, and gradually transition toward authentic interaction.
Before designing the virtual world, we investigated why existing language-learning experiences often fail to support meaningful communication.
